Web Speed measures how fast websites load.
Some websites load slowly even with a fast internet connection. While Speedtest measures the speed of your internet connection, Web Speed reveals the speed of the websites that comprise the internet — and knowing both gives you more insight into your experience on the web.
How to Use Web Speed
To use Web Speed, visit the URL of the website that you would like to measure. Open the Speedtest Chrome Extension after or while the website you are visiting loads. The website’s Web Speed, as measured in seconds, will appear in the Speedtest Chrome Extension window.
What Web Speed Measures
When a website loads, a number of events occur. You can learn more about those events from the W3C Navigation Timing Recommendations.
The Web Speed shown in the Speedtest Chrome Extension uses the domComplete event to mark the end of the page load.
Privacy and Security
Speedtest anonymously collects page load times to determine the speed of a website and which ISPs provide the best web experience. By doing this, we provide you with more information to advocate for the best service possible and help improve your web experience overall.
Information about the speed at which websites load and how well ISPs provide access to the web is collected anonymously and aggregated only to help analyze web experience. This information will soon be included in the Chrome extension, and published on our website.
Here at Ookla, we’re nerds and respect the privacy and security of this information. We have intentionally built a system where it is not possible for us to view data from an individual user. All data we collect is aggregated and we do not store logs of individual transactions or logs of requests. We understand and recognize that it is technically possible to do so, but are committed to building a feature that prioritizes privacy first and foremost.
If you no longer wish to use Web Speed, you can disable the feature in the Speedtest Chrome Extension by clicking the account login icon in the upper right corner and unchecking the box next to Web Speed.
Coming Soon
We’re actively working to bring you more insight into your web experience. Soon, you’ll be able to see how your Web Speed compares to the average Web Speed of other users with your ISP or in your region.
